Dam Safety 2011 Student Paper Competition 

ASDSO is holding its third annual Student Paper Competition, in conjunction with Dam Safety 2011, to be held September 25-29 in the Washington, DC area (National Harbor, MD).
ASDSO invites students to submit papers on a wide variety of topics related to dam and levee safety, including but not limited to design engineering, hydrology, hydraulics, geology, environmental protection, agricultural sciences, construction, risk management, hazard mitigation, emergency management, floodplain management, critical infrastructure security, policy development, and case studies thereof.  Extended abstracts are due February 11, 2011.  Details are below and in the linked flyer:
Download a 2011 ASDSO Student Paper Competition flyer.	Lourdes Polanco, Utah State University, was a winner of ASDSO's 2010 Student Paper Competition for her paper, entitled "Reliability-based Underseepage Analysis in Levees Using Monte Carlo Simulation."

Eligibility:

--Students must be actively pursuing a degree at a U.S. college or university at the time of the extended abstract deadline (February 11, 2011).

--Full-time, part-time, and cooperative education students—both graduate and undergraduate—are eligible.

--Award winners must present their papers at Dam Safety 2011.  (Conference registration fees will be waived for all student attendees.)

--Papers may be co-authored by faculty or colleagues who are not students, but a student must be the lead author, and only student authors who present papers are eligible for prizes.

--Papers cannot have been previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere.

Prizes and Recognition:

--Papers will be judged on their originality, organization, clarity, and demonstrated knowledge of the topic.

--ASDSO will award up to three prizes totaling up to $1500.  For papers co-authored by more than one student, awards will be divided among student co-authors.  A travel stipend of up to $250 will also be granted for each winning paper.

--Winning papers will be published in the Dam Safety 2011 Proceedings.  All other entries will be reviewed for entry in the Dam Safety 2011 Poster Session.

--ASDSO will recognize prize winners at the Dam Safety 2011 Awards Banquet, in the ASDSO newsletter, and in the quarterly Journal of Dam Safety.

Dates:
--Extended abstracts are due February 11, 2011.

--Following review of extended abstracts and support materials, ASDSO will invite full papers by February 25, 2011.

--Full papers will be due May 20, 2011.

--Awards will be announced in June 2011.

--Final revised papers will be due in late July 2011.

--To be considered for an award, abstracts must be extended and detailed, of at least 1,200 words in length.

--Students may submit extended abstracts on-line or by e-mail.

Job Description	Who We Are: Brown WebServices is part of Brown University’s Computing and Information Services (CIS) Department. Brown WebServices builds the Brown web. Our goals are: Manage and support Brown’s web infrastructure tools including the wikis, blogs, and web publishing environments. Support, collaborate with, and coordinate the efforts of web programmers and developers across campus. Design and Develop highly effective, custom websites for Brown offices, groups, and projects. What You'll Do: There will be room to learn and teach us a few things, but specifically, we'll need you to: Assist Web Services Staff in rolling out the BrownSites (a CMS based on Drupal) as a service to Brown departments. Develop departmental sites in BrownSites. Perform Usability and Information Architecture Tests and report on test results. Draft and edit reports/presentations for departments on their website strategy. Report topics often include usability, navigation, and use of social media. SCUREF Announces Another Fellowship Program

The South Carolina Universities Research and Education Foundation (SCUREF) has announced the Nuclear Nonproliferation International Safeguards Graduate Fellowship Program (NNIS). The application deadline for the fellowship is March 4, 2011.
The Nuclear Nonproliferation International Safeguards Graduate Fellowship program (NNIS) provides support to graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in nuclear science and engineering disciplines directly relevant to nuclear nonproliferation. The program aims to cultivate the next generation of highly qualified scientists to meet U.S. Government needs for nuclear nonproliferation expertise and to build a viable student career path in nuclear nonproliferation.

- Student tuition is provided to the university
- Students receive monthly stipends of $2,200 per month
- Appointments are renewable for up to four years
- NNIS Fellows gain theoretical and applied work experience during at least one summer practicum at a Department of Energy laboratory

Automotive and Energy REU Program at Oakland University

The department of Mechanical Engineering at Oakland University (OU) will once again be hosting a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site, “AERIM:Automotive and Energy Research and Industrial Mentorship Program at Oakland University.” The focus will be automotive and energy-related research topics in mechanical engineering with a special emphasis on technologies that aim to improve efficiencies of internal combustion engines, automotive manufacturing processes, automotive materials, alternative propulsion systems and lubrication and wear. We are seeking to recruit ten talented and motivated undergraduate students from across the United States to spend 10 weeks in the summer working on a research project at OU and are especially interested in providing opportunities for women and underrepresented minority students. Students will be provided with a $5,000 stipend, on-campus housing, meal allowance and travel funding. No prior automotive or research experience is required.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Internship Program

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council proudly hosts a 2011 Summer Internship Program

The Science and Technology Council Summer Internship Program is for students who want to pursue a career developing or using cutting-edge motion picture technology, in areas such as imaging, sound, visual effects, robotics, and more.

The internship program is sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council, in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios, Rhythm & Hues, Industrial Light & Magic, Dolby Laboratories and Technicolor.  Each sponsor will host one intern each during the summer term of 2011.

Intern candidates must be full-time, registered students who will return to school in the fall of 2011 to continue with their graduate or undergraduate degree program.  Recent graduates or students graduating this spring are not eligible to apply.

Students are considered eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria:

• Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or registered alien with the right to work in the U.S.
• Must be currently enrolled in a participating accredited program with a minimum of 12 credits.
• Must return to the participating school immediately upon completion of the internship.
• Must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be receiving passing grades in all classes.
• Must be eligible for academic credit.

Senior Design Competition at Northeast Bioengineering Conference

The 37th Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference will have a senior design competition. The conference will be held on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on April 1 – 3, 2011. The senior design competition will be held during the afternoon on Friday April 1, 2011. The judging will be done by industry representatives and there will be cash awards to the winners.
The competition will consist of a poster presentation by the students. There will not be a platform presentation for this event.

For those senior design courses that are ongoing in the spring, 2011 semester, it is reasonable that the projects will not be completed by April 1, 2011 and especially not by the paper submission deadline. Students are encouraged to participate in the competition even though the projects will not have been fully completed. This will be taken into account be the judges. Also if a paper is to be submitted but not ready by the submission deadline of February 1, 2011, papers will be accepted in this category until February 28, 2011.

Please let Stan Reisman, Program Chair, know by January 28, 2011 if you plan to participate and about how many posters they can expect.

SCUREF Announces Two Fellowship Opportunities

The South Carolina Universities Research and Education Foundation (SCUREF) has announced the Rickover Fellowship Program in Nuclear Engineering and the Nuclear Forensics Graduate Fellowship Program. The application deadline for the Rickover Fellowship is January 15, 2011, and the application deadline for the Nuclear Forensics Graduate Fellowship is March 1, 2011.

Society of Women Engineers Scholarships

The upperclass application opened December 1st.  Sophomores and above for the 2011-2012 academic year can apply through February 15th.  Freshmen can create a profile now, but their application will not be available until March.

About SWE Scholarships
The SWE Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. In fiscal year 2010, SWE disbursed more than 170 new and renewed scholarships valued at almost $500,000.

Grants are announced in the summer (sophomore, junior, senior and graduate students) and late summer/early fall (freshmen and re-entry students) for use during the following academic year. Grant payments are made in the fall for corporate-sponsored scholarships and in both the fall and spring for endowed scholarships, upon proof of registration.

Accredited programs are based on ABET accreditation for universities in the U.S. The list of SWE-approved colleges and universities is the same list as the ABET-accredited engineering programs.

FAA Design Competition for Universities

The FAA is continuing to offer a Design Competition for Universities for the 2010 – 2011 academic year. The Competition has added new design categories.


The Competition guidelines and many resources are posted at the Competition website: http://FAADesignCompetition.odu.edu


The broad challenge categories of Airport Operations and Maintenance, Runway Safety/Runway Incursions, Airport Environmental Interactions and Airport Management and Planning embrace many engineering, science, information technology, psychology and management disciplines.

The competition is again open to individual and student teams at U.S. colleges and universities (both undergraduate and graduate) working under the mentorship of a faculty advisor. Winners can earn cash awards and first place winners have the opportunity and travel funds to present their design at a national aviation event during the summer of 2011. A notice of intent is strongly encouraged. This competition opens on August 30, 2010 and closes on April 15, 2011.
