University of Minnesota Innovation Fellows Program Medical Devices Center Seeking Applications

Application Deadline for 2011-12 Fellowship: April 18, 2011

The University of Minnesota Medical Innovation Fellows Program is sponsored by the UMN Medical Devices Center, part of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine. The University of Minnesota is recruiting a four person cross-disciplinary team consisting of postgraduate engineers, seasoned medical device professionals, bioscientists and physicians to collaborate in medical device product and development for the year. Applicants must be dedicated to the creation of new medical devices to improve human health and well being. Those with a special interest in medical technology development are encouraged to apply as are physicians in their residency or fellowship training.

Responsibilities:

• Identifying clinical needs, inventing, and creating and testing prototype solutions 
• Generating 15-20 patent disclosures related to medical devices or diagnostics
• Attending rotations/rounds at the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center and visiting the surrounding medical device industry
• Mentoring to engineering design student groups

Eligibility:

• Degree in engineering, medicine, or biosciences. Medical or doctorate degree preferred.
• Evidence of innovation 
• One or more years of research training required

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship - Boulder, Co.

You and your school are invited to participate in the Boulder, Colorado, Laboratories' National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for students majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering.

Applications for participation in the Boulder SURF program are accepted only from colleges or universities and not from individual students. Please prepare a single proposal from your institution to the SURF NIST Boulder program. This proposal, consisting of forms provided by NIST Boulder, will include a portion completed by an institutional representative and a set of materials to be provided by each student applicant. Opportunities are available in the fields of:

• Chemical Science and Technology
• Electronics and Electrical Engineering
• Information Technology
• Materials Science and Engineering
• Physics

The student application form should indicate in which projects the student is most interested. Please circulate information about this program to other appropriate academic departments and administrative staff at your institution.

We anticipate providing research opportunities for approximately 22 SURFers at the NIST facilities in Boulder, Colorado.

The SURF NIST Boulder Program will run from May 23 to August 5, 2011; adjustments may be made to accommodate specific academic schedules (e.g., quarter systems).

Application deadline for summer 2011 fellowships is February 15, 2011.

Offers will be made beginning around February 25. Because we use a waiting list, successful applicants must accept or decline within 7 days of receiving an offer.

Note that applications for participation in the SURF program are only accepted from colleges or universities, and not from individual students. Please prepare a single proposal from your institution to the NIST SURF program. This proposal, using the forms provided, will include a portion completed by an institutional representative and a set of materials provided by each student applicant. Students can participate in any one of the six NIST laboratories:

• Material Measurement Laboratory
• Physical Measurement Laboratory
• Engineering Laboratory
• Information Technology Laboratory
• Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology
• NIST Center for Neutron Research

The student application form should indicate in which laboratory he/she is most interested. The applications will be considered by the student's first choice, then second choice and finally by all programs, with consideration of the student's preferences and research interests. Please circulate the information about this program to other appropriate academic departments and administrative staff at your institution.

SURFing is a partnership, supported by NIST, NSF, and the participating colleges/universities. We anticipate providing meaningful research opportunities for approximately 130 students in the Gaithersburg site-wide program. The NIST facilities are located just outside Washington, DC.

The SURF Program is anticipated to run between May 23 - August 5, 2011; adjustments may be made to accommodate specific academic schedules (e.g., a limited number of 9-week (June 6 - August 5, 2011 slots).

SCUREF Announces Another Fellowship Program

The South Carolina Universities Research and Education Foundation (SCUREF) has announced the Nuclear Nonproliferation International Safeguards Graduate Fellowship Program (NNIS). The application deadline for the fellowship is March 4, 2011.
The Nuclear Nonproliferation International Safeguards Graduate Fellowship program (NNIS) provides support to graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in nuclear science and engineering disciplines directly relevant to nuclear nonproliferation. The program aims to cultivate the next generation of highly qualified scientists to meet U.S. Government needs for nuclear nonproliferation expertise and to build a viable student career path in nuclear nonproliferation.

- Student tuition is provided to the university
- Students receive monthly stipends of $2,200 per month
- Appointments are renewable for up to four years
- NNIS Fellows gain theoretical and applied work experience during at least one summer practicum at a Department of Energy laboratory
- NNIS Fellows have the opportunity to closely interact with nuclear nonproliferation technical and policy experts at the laboratories and at U.S. Government agencies
- NNIS Fellows are encouraged to publish reports and articles on their work in scientific and engineering journals
- Travel expenses are reimbursable, as applicable
